Song Parodies ->Authors -> Merry & Pippin
Well, it is going on a year here now at the Amiright parody site - time for a look back. We emerged on the parody scene with our first effort, a political parody called "Why Don't You Move to Iraq, Son?" in March of 2003. It was well received and we followed it up with another in the same vein: "Human Shields." A few more Iraq related parodies followed, but it was only a short time before we weren't such 'angry young men' anymore (or angry young women - take you choice, heh heh..) so we began to explore other genres. Foods, bodily functions, celebrities and science all made their mark and we had our first #1 with "You're Caffeine." Several more weekly/monthly #1's followed with "The Sausage Song," "My Buns Are Steel," "Pretty Spry (for an Old Guy)" and "Couldn't We Be Twice."We had other weekly #1's with "Bowler," "The Impromptu Song," "Holiday in Rome," "Dryer Ate My Sock" and our experimental riddle song: "The ____?"
A gender controversy developed after we offered Malcolm Higgins a threesome in "We Think Malcolm Would be Good in Bed," and we continued to fuel the fires with such parodies as "Billy Please Be Our Toy Boy," "Go Ask Billy," "Peregrin Bites," "Man or Woman" and the more recent "I Want a Big Hug."
We next did a series of tributes to fellow writers with "(Royce) She's a Lady," "Michael's Parodies are Renowned," "Phil is Swell - Gotta Read 'Im," "Songs with All New Words (Aimons Florios)" and "Tong." We also did the obligatory name dropper with "We Are Just Writers on the Site Amiright."
The third bi-annual Amiright Parody Awards found us nominated in several catagories, including a catagory of our own (thanks, Billy - we didn't ask you to be our Toy Boy for nothing, heh heh...). We won Best Parody about Religion with "Choosing My Religion" and of course won our own catagory with "You Don't Want to Know What's Inside (The Sausage Song)."
We later experimented with parodying lesser known songs, which brought us the likes of "Living in a House Un-Sided," "Otters of Loch Ness," "Pre Electric Man" and the recent "(Royal) People Who Died." Although not particularly successful vote-wise, we still had fun writing and submitting them.
Our most successful run so far has been with the very satirical "Fifty Ways to Piss Off PETA" which held straight 5's through 30 votes until the one guy got us, and currently stands at 44 votes.
The One Guy did not escape our notice and we saluted him in January with "One Guy (Oh Screw It!)." So far he has not acknowleged the favor on this parody with his classic signature vote!
The addition of such excellent writers as Claude, Rick and Johnny to this site has encouraged us to experiment more with internal rhyme and word play. Pippin dearly loves a pun, and Merry delights in inventing words or attaching impossible suffixes or prefixes. And we try to include a really bad 'postrophe in every parody to keep Ethan on his toes!
What is in the future? We have yet to do our American Pie or Bohemian Rhapsody, so there is that to look forward to, and we will continue to dredge up more obscure oldies to bring to people's attention, as well as perhaps try out some more modern hits.
