Song Names -> Song Titles Not Used as Lyrics -> S

Some songs have titles that aren't used in the lyrics, and end up becoming better known for their lyrics than their title. Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" is better known for the refrain "Everybody must get stoned" than it is for the title.

Comments & Submittor Name
Santana Mother's Daughter The song is clearly a poke at an ex. (girlfriend? wife? succubus?), but the lyrics only paraphrase the title. - princejellyfish

Serj Tankian Beethoven's C*** Find the little evil perpetrator/And feed him to the hungry alligator/You want it all, You want it all/Love is not about the profits/Nor the riches in your dreams/The arms of time are breaking off/Civilization is on trial/The clocks eliminating time/Do you believe in me - Jonathan S.
Sgt. Barry Sadler Ballad Of The Green Berets Not surprisingly, neither the word "ballad" nor the phrase "ballad of" tend to be found in the lyrics of songs whose titles begin with that phrase. This one might be simply called "The Green Berets", from its obvious subject matter. The opening line, "Fighting soldiers from the sky" might also be cited as an apparent "title", but I suspect that that is less likely. - Thessaly Danes
Shabutie Zut The lyrics are ridiculous, and amazing, but not ridiculous enough to have "Zut" thrown in =] - Katy

Think about it. Well, this dies tonight." - Katy

Simon & Garfunkel The 59th St. Bridge Song The opening line, "Slow down, you move too fast/got to make the morning last" and "feelin' groovy" are the best-known lines from this 60's tune. The "59th Street Bridge" is actually the span's nickname. It's official name is the Queensboro Bridge, and it connects Long Island City, Queens, with 59th Street in Manhattan over the East River. - MasonR

The Sleeping Loud and Clear Back, back, back, back through the radio Now who is listening tonight? - Katy

The Smashing Pumpkins Rhinocerus This wonderful creature is never actually mentioned in the song. - Blaydeman
Smashing Pumpkins Where Boys Fear To Tread The title is not mentioned in the song. - Mickey D.

Sting Saint Augustine In Hell Although you hear the h-word at least once, you never hear the name 'Saint Augustine' once in the song. The Stories Brother Louie "Louie, Louie, Louie, Louie.... Louie, Louie, Louie, Lou-eye" The song is obviously about a white male falling in love a black girl--who he introduces to his parents, and things don't go well. "Brother Louie" is never said, so the title is an ironic way of saying how much easier it would have been for Louie--if only he was black.Actually, a rather sad, sobering tune about bigotry. - Rich "Sully" Connelly
