Some songs have titles that aren't used in the lyrics, and end up becoming better known for their lyrics than their title. Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" is better known for the refrain "Everybody must get stoned" than it is for the title.
Band | Song | Comments & Submittor Name | ||
| Garbage | #1 Crush | "I would die for you....I would cry for you....I would pray for you...." Half the song is made up of "I would [such-and-such] for you" lines. - Jonathan S. | ||
| Gary Glitter | Rock and Roll #2 | Played at many sporting events; May be considered by many to be an instrumental with only word(s) spoken is "Hey" many times - Joe H | ||
| Gaslight Anthem | 45 | Nowhere in the chorus, does the singer state "45" I even checked the official lyrics - Jack | ||
| Genesis | Firth of Fifth | I would still like to know whet that means, because they don't even mention it on this song. - Paul Warren | ||
| Genesis | Squank | "At least the word is defined on the album lyric's sheet, but it still sounds like a working title that the band just could not be bothered to ramp-up." - princejellyfish | ||
| George Frederic Handel | Messiah | Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! - Paul Warren | ||
| Godley & Creme | An Englishman In New York | Not to be confused with Sting's latter song of the same name, this 70's release was a none-too-subtle (yet friendly) dig at the American way of life. "Dismembered hopeful My-Lai veterans queuing for sleaze, 'Sorry no dogs, no fags, no shriners, and no amputees', Sexual athlete applies for audition, Willing to make it in any position, Just one of the extras with blood on their faces, In snow-white and the seven basket cases, I'm happy and dopey and dirty in places..." - FussBudget | ||
| Godsmack | Whatever | I'm doin' the best I ever did/I'm doin' the best that I can/I'm doin' the best I ever did/Now, go away - Jonathan S. | ||
| Goo Goo Dolls | Iris | And I don't want the world to see me 'cause I don't think that they'd understand W hen every thing's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am - Bob Borst | ||
| Gorilaz | 19-2000, Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc. and Dirty Harry. | Neither 19-2000 and Clint Eastwood say their name AT ALL in the lyrics, Feel Good Inc. says Feel Good in the lyrics but not Inc and Dirty Harry doesn't say that title in the lyrics either, but Dirty Harry is a Clint Eastwood film, so maybe that song is Clint Eastwood Pt 2 or something. - Time Machine | ||
| Gorillaz | Clint Eastwood | Im happy - got sunshine in a bag - Maya | ||
| Gorillaz | 19-2000 | Got the cool shoeshine - Leo X Daniels | ||
| Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 | The Message | Its like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder How I keep from goin under - Joe H | ||
| Grass Roots | Let's Live For Today | The band members omit the word "let's" from the lyrics. During the choruses, they say "Sha-la-la-la-la-la, live for today." - Isac | ||
| The Grateful Dead | New Potato Caboose | I think The Grateful Dead may fall short of thier goal of writing a song for every single person on the planet, but at least three billion of their numbers may fall into this catagory. - princejellyfish | ||
| Green Day | East Jesus Nowhere | "A fire burns today/Of blasphemy and genocide/The sirens of decay/Will infiltrate the faith fanatics..." Wow, these guys've really got it in for religion, eh? - Jonathan S. | ||
| Green Day | Longview | Bite my lip and close my eyes. Take me away to paradise. I'm so damn bored I'm going blind. And I smell like... - Brian Kelly | ||
| Green Day | Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) | Just the parenthetical title is mentioned. Surprised no one else has submitted this one yet. - Jonathan S. | ||
| Green Day | Basketcase | Sometimes, I give myself the creeps. Sometimes, my mind plays tricks on me. It all keeps adding up. I think I'm cracking up. Am I just paranoid, or am I just stoned? - Brian Kelly | ||
| Green Day | Brain Stew | The one repeated verse is, "My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed / Dried-up and bulging from my skull / My mouth is dry, my face is numb / F***ed up and spun out in my room / On my own, here we go" - Jonathan S. | ||
| Green Day | Brain Stew | "My eyes feel like they're going to bleed/Dried up and bulging out my skull" is probably the closest Billie Joe Armstrong comes to mentioning a "brain stew". - newrock | ||
| Green Day | 409 In Your Coffeemaker | "In A Daze" or "In My Daze" might be thought to be the title, as one of those phrases ends several verses. The actual title is nowhere in the lyrics. - Alan Toyce | ||
| Greg Khin | The Breakup Song | We had broken up for good just an hour before.... - Carole Krus | ||
| Greg Kihn Band | The Breakup Song | "They don't write 'em like that any more" - Joe H | ||
| Grinspoon | Just Ace | I don't really know anyone who knows the song, but I think some people would refer it as "Living in Another Space". In fact, I think I heard "Mistake" as "Just Ace". - Ned | ||
| Grits | I Still Know What You Bit Last Summer | A short remix (of sorts) of their song "Stop Bitin'," which appears on the same album as this one (Grammatical Revolution). - Jonathan S. | ||
| Grits | Return Of the Antagonist | Interestingly, while they never say, "Return of," the OTHER half of the title is mentioned in the song's chorus: "The antagonist has got me locked in a room The doors shut behind me It'll be mornin' before they find me I hear a fiendish laugh! (Ha ha ha) But I'm still gettin' half" - Jonathan S. |
