Song Titles Not Used as Lyrics:

Song Name
Comments & Submitter Name
"Ballad Of The Green Berets"Not surprisingly, neither the word "ballad" nor the phrase "ballad of" tend to be found in the lyrics of songs whose titles begin with that phrase. This one might be simply called "The Green Berets", from its obvious subject matter. The opening line, "Fighting soldiers from the sky" might also be cited as an apparent "title", but I suspect that that is less likely. - Thessaly Danes

Story about this misheard lyric by: Cody Finke

Someone had to do with mishearing "beret" as "parade" in Prince's song "Raspberry Beret", and inverted hearing "parade" as "beret" in the Pepper Ann theme song recently, so I thought it was pretty much the same here hearing "beret" as "parade" in this one.

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"The Ballad Of The Green Berets"
The Lyrics:
Back at home a young wife waits.
Her Green Beret has met his fate.
He has died for those oppressed,
Leaving her his last request:
Put silver wings on my son's chest,
Make him one of America's best.
He'll be a man they'll test one day.
Have him win the Green Beret.
Why:
With the lilting cadence and tune of a patrotic hymn, this song starts off as a celebration of the Green Berets. But it ends with the lines above, telling of the "young wife" widowed by the death of her Green Beret husband, and about his "last request" to have his son follow in his footsteps, with an all-too-poignant foreboding of the possibility of history repeating itself.
