My biggest influence has always been reggae. I can also remember being very much into Tamla Motown. I fancied myself as the Balsall Heath answer to Michael Jackson.

Band Name Origins:

  • UB-40 stands for "Unemployment Benefits" form #40, a reference somewhat well-known in the UK but not known in the states. The boys came up with the name for the band while standing in line at the unemployment office. From a Rolling Stone interview. Submitted by: Bob
  • UB40 was in actual fact the name of the form you had to complete to receive unemployment benefit at that time in Britain. This is why their first album was called "Signing Off". The album cover was a mock UB40 form. Submitted by: Barbara

The Repetitive Lyrics:
Come back darling, give me another try
I'll keep you satisfied
Why They're Repetitive:
The song lasts 3:29. The background music hardly changes...and to add to the excitement, these are the only lyrics in the song. No wonder the woman didn't come back.

Scandalise our name.
Why They're Misrhymed:
The funny thing is, I always thought this rhymed until I saw the lyrics. But don't blame ub40: in their defence, they didn't write the song.

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"The Earth Dies Screaming"
The Lyrics:
Bodies hanging limp, no longer bleeding.
The earth dies screaming
Ok, the title and the lyrics are depressing but the rhythm/melody sounds joyful. Nevertheless, this song is generally very dark especially when you take into context the threat of nuclear war throughout the 80s.

Bad Ringtone Choices:

"Red Red Wine"
The Lyrics:
Red Red Wine, you make me feel so fine
You keep me rockin' all of the time
If people heard this ringtone go off during a Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, it would be very awkward to say the least!
