You could say this is insulting to his girl-friend, but I feel it comes off so blatant it's just funny...

Well, the dude says the entire verse, like, 5 times! It's got slightly different wording, but it's still in the repetitive category in my opinion.

Actually this refers to a very real incident where Deep Purple were to do some recording in a Casino (hence '..they burned down the gambling house..'), but somebody shot a flare gun into the air inside and it burned it down. Apparently the smoke spread over the nearby Lake Geneva and hence 'Smoke on the Water'.

Not much of a focus in the line of images here. In fact, the band were pressed into writing a plausible single, cause although they had done a killer of an album ('In Rock') there was nothing that would catch instant airplay. So they went to the studio in a huff, Ritchie and Roger came up with the backing track - and then (as Roger Glover tells the story) the band would try to come up with the kind of banal lyrics that would befit the single - and rhyme with 'black night'.. 'I don't feel too bright' somebody muttered - right, in it goes!

Bet you saved it. But what's even better, the working title of this song was 'Kneel And Pray' - a reference not to attending church, but to giving head! Someone at the EMI made the band change the title, but on the jubilee edition of 'DP In Rock' you can actually hear an engineer say 'Alright, gentlemen: Kneel And Pray, take one'
