Band Name Origins:
- No, actually, the other guy in correct. I have an interview with Andy (a few actually) where he explicitly gives the Leonard Cohen song as the original inspiration for the band name. Leonard Cohen in turn took his song title from a convent of nuns (They are not exclusive to Leeds). Andy liked Cohen's use of a convent of nuns, Sisters of Mercy, used instead as groupies or prostitutes... ladies of the night, or Sisters of Mercy... Submitted by: Chris
- "Leonard Cohen wrote a song in which - like us - "The Sisters Of Mercy, they are not departed or gone". He should know. Is that why we picked the name? Almost. We did feel that the song would help the dimmest of the dim to interpret the name. There is an ancient order of nuns called The Sisters Of Mercy. Significantly, the name is a popular reference to prostitutes. (Leonard Cohen's song can be heard in the background of a scene from the film 'McCabe And Mrs Miller', in which Julie Christie leads her bedraggled troupe of whores up the muddy hill which is the main street of a shanty town in the wild west.)" - Originally writen by Andrew Eldritch Submitted by: Mairi

Misheard Lyrics Story:
|
"This Corrosion"
Misheard Lyrics: Hey now, hey Brown Cow!
Original Lyrics: Hey now, hey now now!
|
Story about this misheard lyric by: Bart I was introducing my girlfriend to the group and played this song for her. She asked why they were singing about brown cows and I asked what she meant. She misheard the lyrics as such (which is closer to a nursery rhyme of old). |

Repetitive Lyrics:
"Heartland"
The Repetitive Lyrics: My heartland heartland heartland
Why They're Repetitive: First set: 4x Second set: 8x Third set: at least 32x Worse still there are not *that* many other lyrics in it! An absolute ballache to sing!

The Repetitive Lyrics: Like a healing hand
Why They're Repetitive: Most of the discography and lyrics sites only acknowledge six repetitions of this. However, I was bored one night, and actually counted every time it is said. In approximately six minutes, Eldritch sings 'like a healing hand' over 40 times. It sounds quite nifty, yes, but is it really neccessary?

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:
"More"
The Lyrics: Some people get by
With a little understanding Some people get by With a whole lot more I don´t know Why you gotta be so undermanding One thing I know I want more I want more (And I need all the love that I can´t get to) (And I need all the love that I can get) (And I need all the love that I can´t get, too). Why: The song is about rape, pure and simple. When the singer says he needs love he can't get, the girl is most likely resisting.
