Band Name Origins:

Was trying to to get a gig for the then 7 piece unnamed soul band. Ents convener at Dundee University, Keith Harris (Stevie Wonder Management) asked, "Are they any good?" The reply was, "Well, they are better than the average white band." Submitted by: obelix
In the '70's, the popular slang phrase in Scotland, when describing something, was to end it was to end it with: "for the average white man". For example: "How cold is it outside?" The Average White Band took this funky mainly instrumental dance tune to #1 on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 charts in 1975. "Pick Up The Pieces" was extremely popular in Discos of the time. The only lyrics in the song appear half-way through, and it's the title repeated four times.
