Rescue Gloria From Eggshells		As a child I learned the Christmas song "Angels We Have Heard On High". Back then "they" had me pronouncing the Line "Gloria in excelsis Deo" more or less as "Gloria in ex chell cease day oh". Later I became more or less acquainted with the differences in pronunciation between classical Latin and "church Latin", and tried singing it both ways, with "excelsis" being variously pronounced as something like I learned as a child, or more like "ex kell cease", the latter seeming more or less to fit classical Latin pronunciation. Then, during my early college days I sang in a church choir. The director of that choir insisted that we pronounce "excelsis" pretty much as "egg shell cease", fitting neither classical Latin nor "church Latin" as I'd thought I had some idea of those pronunciation patterns. In any event, that sort of spoiled the song for me, as it seemed so crass to sing something that sounded like "Gloria in eggshell". Since then I've seen that that is a commonly taught pronunciation (for that song at least), but it never ceases to bug me. I'd rather sing that line (or hear it sung) most any other way than what sounds like it includes the super crass "Gloria in eggshell"! So, hence my suggested band name, "Rescue Gloria From Eggshells".		D. Melody Dole, MD
