| Galt MacDermot, Gerome Ragni and James Rado | Bed | Oh the bed. | "Bed" is yet another song from the musical, "Hair". It is a chorus piece performend by the Tribe. It is considered a celebration of all things, and they make reference that where all things are are in the bed. Yes, very late 1960's trippy hippy type of reference. - Peter | |||
| Galt MacDermot, Gerome Ragni and James Rado | Hashish | Hashish, Cocaine, Marijuana, Opium, LSD, DMT, STP, BLT, A & P, IRT, APC, Alcohol, Cigarettes, shoe polish, cough syrup, peyote, Equinol, dexamil, | The first line continues: "... camposine, Chemadrine, Thorazine, trilophon, dexadrine, benzedrine, methedrine, S-E-X and Y-O-U, Wow!" "Hashish" is from the 1968 Broadway musical, "Hair". "Hair" was a popular musical set in 1968 Greenwich Village, NYC about the experience of Claude (a transplant from Britain) and had a very loose storyline (with most of the musical almost an early attempt at a music video compilation). But "Hair" hit it's mark and was timely. It would run for 1742 performances from April 29, 1968 to July 11, 1972 with such events as the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Woodstock, the continuing Vietnam War, the Moon Landing, Kent State, Women's liberation movement, the voting age being lowered to 18 years old, Nixon's enemies list, etc. making news. "Hashish" is a chorus piece, sung by the Tribe, therefore the credit to Galt McDermot who wrote the music and Gerome Ragni and James Rado who wrote the lyrics. - Peter | |||

Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits). | Gary "U.S." Bonds | Quarter To Three | Don't you know that I danced, I danced till a quarter to three With the help, last night, of Daddy G. | "Quarter To Three" was the only #1 song for Gary Bonds in spring 1961. Gary Bonds really influenced Bruce Springsteen. - Peter | |||
| Gary Lewis & the Playboys | This Diamond Ring | Who wants to bu-u-uy this diamond ri-i-i-ing? She took it off her finger now, it doesn't mean a thi-i-i-ing. | Gary Lewis is the son of comedian Jerry Lewis and inherited many of Jerry's both good looks and boyish charm as well as some of the comedic looks, as well. But Gary wanted to be known as a musician and especially compete in the mid-1960's with the British wave started by the Beatles and still going strong in 1965. The last name though didn't hurt him, and helped him and his group, the Playboys, break through. He and his group, the Playboys, took this song, "This Diamond Ring" (their first record) straight number one for two weeks back in February 1965. This would be the start of a string of top ten songs during the years 1965 to 1966 for Gary Lewis & the Playboys, although "This Diamond Ring" remained their only visit to #1. - Peter | |||

| Gene Kelly | Singin' In The Rain | I'm singin' in the rain | "Singin' In The Rain" is from the 1952 motion picture of the same name. "Singin' In The Rain", the movie, was one of those few movie musicals that didn't get it's start on Broadway, but was Hollywood creating it's own version of a Broadway musical in light of the popularity of other movies that did start as Broadway musicals. "Singin' In The Rain" was pure Hollywood and probably couldn't have been done as a Broadway musical, first, since it was about Hollywood back in the late 1920's as talkies started taking the place of silent movies. Gene Kelly played actor, Don Lockwood, who literally sings this song in the rain (another one of those motion picture scenes that is internationally known). Actress-singer, Debbie Reynolds, as the character of Kathy, would sing the song later in the movie. - Peter | |||
| Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor | Moses | Moses supposes his toeses are roses But Moses supposes erroneously | Gene Kelly as Don and Donald O'Connor as Cosmo sing this song to Don's diction coach (for the new talkies), making fun of him and on a lark, in the 1952 Hollywood musical, "Singin' In The Rain". - Peter | |||
| Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor | Fit As A Fiddle | Fit as a fiddle and ready for love. | "Fit As A Fiddle" was another song from the 1952 Hollywood musical, "Singin' In The Rain". Gene Kelly as Don and Donald O'Connor as Don's best friend and fellow actor, Cosmo, sing "Fit As A Fiddle" early in the film in flashbacks to their days struggling on Broadway in New York City. Both even "play" a fiddle while singing the song. - Peter | |||

| George Harrison | My Sweet Lord | My sweet Lord | George Harrison was the first of the Beatles to have a solo #1 single on Billboard Magazine's HOT 100 charts after the break up of the Fab Four. "My Sweet Lord" went to #1 the last two weeks of December 1970, and would stay there for the first two weeks of January 1971. But the single wasn't without controversy and a lawsuit that the silent Beatle would lose. Back in 1963, the girl group the Chffons had a #1 hit single entitled, "He's So Fine". When the Chffons and the writers of that song heard George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" they thought that he had lifted the melody right from "He's So Fine" and substituted the lyrics to "My Sweet Lord". The Chiffons and the writer of "He's So Fine" sued successfully George Harrison and the silent Beatle had to pay a fine to keep the printing of "My Sweet Lord" lyrics in circulation. Although many thought that Harrison might never sing "My Sweet Lord", again, he did and Harrison even poked fun at the lawsuit and perhaps his unintentional lifting of the melody of "He's So Fine" by going on British television, dressed as a pirate, in 1975 and singing "A Pirate's Life For Me" to the melody of "My Sweet Lord" or "He's So Fine". - Peter | |||

| Gerry Rafferty | Baker Street | Winding your way down on Baker Street, light in your head and dead on your feet. | Summer of 1978's "Baker Street" was guitarist/vocalist Gerry Rafferty's (born Gerald Rafferty on April 16, 1947 in Paisley, Scotland to a Scottish mom and Irish dad) greatest solo hit. Went to #3 in the U.K. and #2 in the U.S. "Baker Street" is known for it's combination saxophone, drum, bass, and keyboard long opening, before Rafferty sings the famous opening lines and the great solo saxophone playing in the middle of the tune (the saxophone is played by Raphael Ravenscroft). "Baker Street" was biographical, about Rafferty's early days waiting tables in restaurants in London's tube station before he became famous with Stealer's Wheel ("Stuck In The Middle With You" in 1973). "Baker Street" was from Rafferty's "City To City" lp, and is still heard quite a bit on Classic Hits, Classic Rock and Easy Listening stations. The saxophone solo of "Baker Street" showed up on an episode of "The Simpsons" with Lisa Simpson playing the solo. And the Foo Fighters covered "Baker Street" in the 1990's. - Peter | |||
| Ginger Rogers | I'll Be Seeing You | I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places That this heart of mine embraces all day through In that small cafe, the park across the way | "Ill Be Seeing You" is very associated with World War II because it was sung by many artists on the radio and also on Bob Hope's tours. But the song was originally written before the war, in 1938, by Irving Kahall & Sammy Fain. It would have a resurgence of interest when Ginger Rogers performed it in the movie by the same name, in 1944, when Rogers starred as an ex-convict. Liberace would also made it a signature song of his. But many artists have recorded versions of it since 1944. - Peter | |||
