Story about this misheard lyric by: indy gent This happened during my English class in high school, circa 1982. The teacher was discussing a short story about a Civil War battle near the Chattahoochie River. She then asked the class, 'What was that song about Billy Joe jumping off the Chattahoochie Bridge?' The annoyed class yelled emphatically, 'That was the Tallahassee Bridge!' And she agreed with them! I was too embarrassed to even correct everyone with 'Tallahatchie' for fear of being castigated as a big mouthed 'know-it-all'. :-[ |

Why: The beachfront of Biloxi lies on the Mississippi Sound.

| "Ode To Billy Joe"
The Lyrics: Brother married Becky Thompson;
They bought a store in Tupelo. Why: Tupelo is a city in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Mississippi. Perhaps it's major claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but that has no obvious tie-in with this song. But since the song refers to a Tallahatchie bridge and there is a Tallahatchie River in northern Mississippi, this Mississippi city is surely what the song must refer to.
