Story about this misheard lyric by: Tiffany Llewellyn-affit I told a friend about how I once misheard this song this way. She scolded me and said she'd never submit any such thing. She said it would be such a naughty thing to attribute to Judy Garland. But I thought about it and realized that it didn't move me so much. After all, if she had worshipped porn stars (and had had no more harmful 'vices' than that), Judy Garland might well have had a good chance of being alive today. [Ed.'s note: I doubt that seriously.] |

Funny Lyrics:
"Meet Me In St. Louis"
The Funny Lyrics: We will dance the hoochie coochie
I will be your tootsie wootsie. Why They're Funny: I've just gotten back from St. Louis, and I can assure everyone that the folks don't talk like that there.

Inappropriate Lyrics:
"San Francisco"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: But the only bridge
That's a real darn bridge Is the bridge across the bay Why They're Inappropriate: Judy is no doubt referring to the Golden Gate Bridge... except that bridge actually crosses the Golden Gate Strait (hence its name). There is a bridge that does cross the San Francisco Bay called, of course, the San Francisco Bay Bridge, but why would Judy be singing its praises?

Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (original)"
The Lyrics: Through the years, we all will be together
If the fates allow. Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow. Why: This song originally came out in the 1944 movie, "Meet Me In St. Louis". It likely fit in some middle portion of the movie, in which the outlook for the characters was less than bright and no happy ending seemed on its way as yet. The song has since been remarketed, it would seem, as a Christmas song to stand on its own, and some lyrics have been changed to distance it from whatever bleak movie plotlines it originally reflected. The last line quoted above has been changed in the new and now more familiar version to "Hang a a shining star upon the highest bough". That is very much a dangling line in the revised version. It is about decorating a Christmas tree, but note that otherwise the song never mentions any Christmas tree! I have read on Wikipedia that Judy Garland herself actually requested that the lyrics be changed to distance the song from the somber mood of its original movie context. In its new version it has gone on to be used in other movies, most notably probably the highly successful first "Home Alone" movie in 1990, quite possibly giving the song a new boost to its popularity.

| "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (original)"
The Lyrics: Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light. Next year all our troubles will be out of sight. Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the yuletide gay. Next year we may all be many miles away. Why: This song originally came out in the 1944 movie, "Meet Me In St. Louis". It likely fit in some middle portion of the movie, in which the outlook for the characters was less then bright and no happy ending seemed on its way as yet. The song has since been remarketed, it would seem, as a Christmas song to stand on its own, and some lyrics have been changed to distance it from whatever bleak movie plotlines it originally reflected. Of the lines quoted above, those beginning with "Next year" have been changed, for the freestanding version best known today, to "From now on our troubles will be out of sight" and "From now on our troubles will be miles away", to fit immediate hopes for yuletide cheer rather than bleak current prospects and dreamy hopes for "next year". I have read on Wikipedia that Judy Garland herself actually requested that the lyrics be so changed. In its new version it has gone on to be used in other movies, most notably probably the highly successful first "Home Alone" movie in 1990, quite possibly giving the song a new boost to its popularity.

Onomatopoeia in Lyrics:
"The Trolley Song"
The Lyrics: Clang clang clang went the trolley!
Ding ding ding went the bell! Why: Covered by many other artists, this song evokes the mood of riding an old trolley car at the turn of the century in America.

| "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart"
The Lyrics: Zing went the strings of my heart.
Why: "Zing" represents the sound a stringed instrument (perhaps a harp or violin) when its strings are struck by hand. Although it would be literally impossible for a heart's strings to make that noise. :)
