So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains.
And we never even know we have the key.
This is a great line, and makes a lot of sense on the surface. But come on, 'so often times it happens?' Why not just say 'often.' This is a roundabout jumbled way of filling space.

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You've been out ridin' fences.
One's senses are within oneself, not somewhere else that one can come to. And how can one ride fences? They generally don't go anywhere!

We can beat around the bushes
We can get down to the bone.
I have no idea what this means. I always thought the lyrics were 'We can meet around the bushes, We can get down to the phone', which I think actually makes more sense.

She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends.
Males aren't usually described as pretty; they are handsome.

You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave
It's impossible to check out if you're not leaving. How can one check out and stay?

', "Love Will Keep Us Alive"
When we're hungry,
Love will keep us alive.
OMG.... for a Grammy-nominated hit like this song, these have got to be THE LEAST sense-making lyrics ever known to man - I mean, come on: "hungry", then "keep us alive"!? Maybe "when we're hungry, love will SATISFY us" would've made more sense - but it wouldn't rhythmically fit in the meter. But there's a difference between satisfaction and survival.

I'm tryin' to change this water to wine.
YOU can't change water to wine! Only Jesus can do that.

And she drove herself to madness with a silver spoon
I still have no idea what this lyric means, every time I hear it I think of the titular woman having a binge eating problem.
