Story about this misheard lyric by: Joyce I was in junior high school chorus in the early 70s, and we were learning this song for our spring concert. During rehearsal the choir director started laughing. He then spent the next few minutes lecturing us on the importance of clearly ENUNCIATING our words. |
Nonsensical Lyrics:
"Look What They've Done To My Song"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: Well it's the only thing
that I could do half right, and it's turning out all wrong Wish I could find a good book to live in I'd never have to come out and look what they've done to my song Why They're Nonsensical: As I sit here writing I'm literally laughing at the complete absurdity of Look what they've done to my song. That in itself is something of a rarity I've found,as usually the nonsensical numbers I've brought to book veer more towards the not even funny-just stupid category.Guys, ever heard this thing?I mean, not just the lyrics, but the way they're sung? This number is one of the maddest outpourings that will ever seep into your ears. We've basically got an extremely stupid number here. This girl would appear to have written some sort of song and sent it somewhere in the hope of getting her lyrics published. It appears she's been, well, half successful.Actually she does mention that it's about the only thing she could do half right. However the song evidently needed work, and she's far from pleased at the realignment-It's turning out all wrong in her eyes. All this prattling is being addressed to her mother it seems. We are then confronted with as crazy a statement as I've ever heard in a song,or outside of one for that matter-Wishing she could be a character in a book,so she'd never have to look at the changes to her song ever again.Notice the exact wording of the statement too in the particular lyrics I've picked out.She doesn't say...and look AT what they've done to my song-She says...and look what they've done to my song.Next she is babbling-Look what they've done to my brain. They've cook it like a chicken bone.I think I'm half insane-Oh brother.Have we got someone so far around the twist she's meeting herself coming the other way or what?To make matters even worse she busts into French at this point.I'm no French expert so can't make head or tail of this part.Ten to one though it's more madness. She then goes on about them doing other stuff to her song, like tying it up in a plastic bag, then turning it upside down, and also cooking it like a chicken bone. You'll notice she used that very same analogy for what they had done to her brain.[On a more serious note for a moment,it had occurred to me that this New Seekers number could be telling the story of a girl with some kind of mental illness just about managing to be at least half successful at such a big achievement. However I have discounted the notion as the wording of the entire number argues against that.Such a girl,or indeed anyone of sound mind, would be only too pleased to have their song chosen by a record company, amendments or not.]So basically what we are left with is a completely stupid number by the group which also unleashed kack like I'd like to teach the world to sing, which has also come under my wrath in a previous posting.Look what they've done to my brain?I think I'm half insane?HALF?Like, did she really say HALF insane?Lady you've got to be maybe THE most crazy woman I've ever heard in a song.Look what they've done to my song?Perhaps it's more a question of what has whoever wrote it done to THIS song?

The Nonsensical Lyrics: Grow apple trees,
and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves Why They're Nonsensical: A pea-brained piece of fantasy born of stupidity in the early 70s.Even as a child back then it sounded very silly to me.Today,as a man living in uncertain times it sounds like the final gasp of insanity.Listening to them twittering on about furnishing the world with love, cuddling it,keeping it company, building it a home.Building it a home?Like, how?Where?Like, would someone kindly tell me what they were raving about. They would like to have all on Earth holding hands, saying in unison-Ah,peace throughout the land-Say,keep smokin' that stuff.Maybe then you might just see that happen-At least, inside your own crazy brains.Fact is guys wishful thinking twaddle like this is just plain annoying nowadays.Maybe some dreamers thought back in the 70s that utopia might, just might, lie around the corner a few years later. Now we know different. We live in really crazy times, guys, and we're dealing with everything from blow hot-blow cold folks to the spectre of doom, either through crime on the streets, the shadow of war, perhaps even ourselves. All of which isn't to say these things weren't around in the 70s,but today's demons seem even more widespread, and even more nasty. The most irritating nonsense of all however,is that thing about growing apples, bees and doves-Like,guys,have we just entered the twilight zone here or what's up?Those white doves-Peace emblems? That what they mean?Maybe, but how about bees and apples, especially since it was alledgedly an apple which set the human race on a downward spiral to start with?I believe that initially this fairy tale number accompanied a television ad for Coca Cola.Guys,a thought-The whole thing might have been inspired by that other kind of coke.
