Story about this misheard lyric by: Allison Cole I heard this on the radio when was 9 or 10 yrs old. At the time, I thought I was so intelligent for even knowing the word "wretched". I tried to show off for my Dad and his buddies by walking into the living room and singing this lyric. "Dad, " I said, "listen to this song." After I sang it, he said to his friends "See that? My kid is SMART". I was so proud and I just sashayed out of the room with my head held high. I did not realize I'd been singing it wrong until I was 19 years old, driving cross country with a friend. This song came on, we're both singing, and she just looks at me and says "What are you singing?!" I could not believe that I didn't hear the correct lyrics! Even now, when I hear the song, I still hear "You give me white rum". My family sings it that way too just to make fun of me. |
