Back when this song was popular, I worked an evening job at a pizza joint and I was often still in bed at ten and was working later that night at eight (though my shift began at 3:30). And since I earned very little money, pretty much the only thing I could afford was my breakfast (or lunch or dinner). So, for these reasons, I interpreted the lyrics the way I did.
