I thought that these some reminiscences by Archie about sports in the 'good old days.' Miller, perhaps a baseball manager (such as former Yankee skipper Miller Huggins), may have once put a backup player in the starting lineup, one who was a weak hitter or had a weak throwing arm—a decision which ultimate cost the team a key victory. And I always imagined ‘Giarolla Sal’ as the name of a racehorse, perhaps a longtime rival of Sea Biscuit’s, which Archie may have won a few bucks betting on. (‘Giarolla’ sounded like an Italian surname or some town in old Italy—either of which seemed plausible to include in such a name, considering the odd monikers often given to thoroughbreds. (And altogether, not such bad reasoning, given that I was in elementary school when the show first came on the air!)
