Story about this misheard lyric by: Patti Drennan I was about 9 and would sing along to the radio with the incorrect lyrics. I learned from my mother the accurate lyrics! |
"Billy Bayou"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: Billy was a boy kinda big for his size.
Why They're Nonsensical: I suppose the nonsense here is intentional, aimed at being whimsical. But "big for his size" makes no sense. Whatever his size is, it is just that. One can be neither big nor little for one's size. A similar (and I suppose intentionally) nonsensical phrase that I've heard is "young for his age".

"'Little Old Dime'"
The Dated Lyrics: 'I can't call anymore, you're my last dime',
Why They're Dated: The cheapest pay phone I've seen in the last five years has been 35c. [I cringe to think what songwriters will do when payphones hit $1 per call; after all, how many things rhyme with 'buck' that you can sing in mixed company?]
