Story about this misheard lyric by: Carolee You'd think I would have learned my lesson about mixing up these two words by now. The entry under Travis Tritt's 'Here's a Quarter...' that has 'maybe one of your sordid affairs' listed as 'maybe one of your assorted affairs' is also mine and was misheard by me years before my mishearing of this one. |

| "Tucumcari"
The Lyrics: Twelve more miles to Tucumcari.
I've been hurrying there To the gal I'm gonna marry Why: Refers to Tucumcari, a town in the eastern part of the U.S. State of New Mexico. Although a town of only about 6000 people, it is a place well known for its size. Not only is it the largest town in a good portion of northeast New Mexico, it is a major stop between Amarillo, Texas and Albuquerque, New Mexico, probably the largest town located a substantial part of the distance form one of those cities to the other. The major higwhay today connecting those cities by way of Tucumcari is Interstate 40. The western part of Interstate 40, including this stretch, was historically part of the corridor of the legendary US 66.
