| Original Performer: | Dire Straits |
| Parody Song Title: | "Insultin' Steve Green" |
| Parody Written by: | Edward Genereux |
On 31 October 2006, contemporary Christian vocalist Steve Green posted in his official site's blog an article about the anniversary of the Reformation, which created Protestantism. The article glorified Protestantism in my opinion and while many say otherwise, to me it was bluntly anti-Catholic. I decided to take out my anger in the present parody, which spoofs Dire Straits' first big hit on both sides of the pond.
Stanza I.
I read that Steve Green Ministries
Was insulting Catholics like subhumans.
South of the Mason-Dixon Line I saw few agree
‘Cos I’d arrived in Dixie, where they’re Baptists
Who are alright, though our Lord says they can’t see.
Stanza II.
And then I stepped inside for a Nashville megachurch service
On the feast of that day in 1517;
Martin Luther was praised like a god
By worship leaders such as Steve Green,
Who’s from down South, who’s from down South, Tennessee.
Stanza III.
I soon was in a fix, the year was ‘06
And I didn’t want to bring up the fact that I was Catholic,
Lest I be caught and sent to Nashville’s labour house.
But Mr. Green’s post was the thing that made me sick.
Stanza IV.
Now I don’t mind a church that lacks a head that is seen,
But I’m still Catholic and that is a fact.
Maybe he was brainwashed by his Marijean,
Who might just break their marriage pact.
I shall insult, I shall insult Steve Green.
Stanza V.
Then I bribed Point of Grace and gave them top weapons to fight back
So that they could free me from my woes that Halloween day.
They like R&B and country songs; same thing goes for me,
But MOR I really hate!
Soon the insults, soon the insults cannot abate. (Abate…)
(Guitar solo)
Stanza VI.
Then we’ll fight for control of the church microphone
So that some ecumenism is seen.
One day, when the trump calls us home,
The KKK’s lot will be so lean.
Let’s go insultin’, let’s go insultin’ Steve Green!
(Guitar solo)
