Story about this misheard lyric by: Judith

Strictly speaking, it was the name of the song, not the lyric, that my friend got wrong when he wrote it in a game of Charades.

Real Places Mentioned in Songs:

"Cotton Fields"
The Lyrics:
It was down in Louisiana,
Just about a mile from Texarkana.
Why:
Here's a song that actually refers to two real places in the process of designating an unreal place. It refers to the U.S. state of Louisiana, and to the city of Texarkana, along the border between Texas and Arkansas. Texarkana is rather close to Louisiana, but not nearly so close as the song implies. It is about 30 miles from the northwest corner of Louisiana, the closest approach of that state to Texarkana. So the overall location implied by the song ia an impossible location, even though it does name two real places.
