The Lyrics
Rutgersfest was an annual concert that had been held on the Rutgers-New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses for thirty years, but was officially cancelled after its disastrous 2011 show. (The show itself was fine, but what happened afterwards was not. People, mainly from off campus, stampeded the buses, got stuck in traffic, overwhelmed the bars by the New Brunswick campus, got drunk, proceeded to get rowdy, and some gunshots were fired.)
My buddies sent me to Rutgersfest,
And shoved me into Billy and Dan;
And so I danced around,
On that muddy college ground,
Near the banks of the old Raritan.
Refrain:
Ahh, the pranks of the old Raritan (my friends)
Where Rutgersfest evermore shall fan,
For a gun was shot
Hit old John on the spot,
By the trucks* of the old Raritan.
Then poke fun at old Alma Mater
We crowded buses and a van

*The "grease trucks" on College Avenue are a well-known Rutgers U. landmark. **Jersey Shore slang for "outsiders". While we're not on the Shore, I might as well steal their slang anyway. ***This refers to the fact that traffic on Route 18, which unites the campuses by connecting them across the Raritan River, was at a standstill for so long that people took to opening emergency windows on the buses and jumping out of them while still on the highway bridge.
