The Lyrics

Well, I guess someone had to do it eventually, though I do think it should have been an American rather than an Englishman.
My country, 'tis of thee
Robber of liberty
Of thee I sing
Land where my grandchild died
Thanks to New York cops' pride
From ev'ry mountainside
Their gunshots ring!

My native country, thee
Where no one dares feel free
Thy name's a joke
Big name banks took some spills
With all their subprime thrills
And left us with huge bills
So we're all broke

TSA told the truth
'Bout how they molest youth
People were shocked
But then I did wake up
To weep into my cup
Of coffee, which I sup
My world was rocked

The US President
Must prove that he's not bent
That much is plain
What with all the bad press
About the IRS
Why don't they just confess
And save their pain?

Ho-hum.

Actually, the original is the British national anthem "God Save The Queen".

Rubbish!

Steve K. said: "Actually, the original is the British national anthem 'God Save The Queen'." Actually, the original is a German song, from which the melody was taken to make the other songs. Google "My Country, 'Tis of Thee Wikipedia" if you don't believe me.

Sheogorath, yes, this country has many problems and you have expressed them well. Except for the banking issue, which was caused more by the Community Reinvestment Act by than by problems with the banks, themselves. The last verse is excellent.

I think Steve K is correct on the origin of TOS. Wikipedia does not show any reference to "God Save the King" being based on a German song. On the other hand, Wikipedia does indicate that “The first German national anthem used the melody of "God Save the King" with the words changed to Heil dir im Siegerkranz, and sung to the same tune as the UK version.”

@ John Jenkins: According to Wikipedia, "The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 seeks to address discrimination in loans made to individuals and businesses from low and moderate-income neighborhoods." According to other sources, the banks chose to address this discrimination by offering loans to low and moderate-income neighborhoods without reducing rates to match those incomes, thus guaranteeing defaults. So while the Community Reinvestment Act was a factor in the sub-prime fiasco, the banks were the only actual cause.
