| Parody Song Title: | "Who Are Your Parody Heroes?" |
| Parody Written by: | Old Man Ribber |
Question of the day - Who were your greatest parody influences, icons, and role models? My song highlights mine and guesses at yours. ;D
Who got you into writing - all this clever parody?
Who were your wordsmith heroes from age three?
When you first heard their send-ups, who'd you want to be?
Who made you want to join this lunacy?
When you would sing the kid songs - did you make the words fun-ny?
Did you change "Old Smokey" to "spaghetti"?
An on their birthdays did you change the lines to "You
Look like a monkey and smell like one too"?
Oh did you roar with laughter when you heard your first Spike Jones?
Did you feel something in your funny bones?
Back in the fifties did Stan Freberg break your gloom
With "Day-O," "Great Pretender," and "Sh-Boom"?
Did Allan Sherman's Yiddish shtick just liven up your day?
He truly was a master - so Oy Vey!
Tom Lehrer was a genius, sometimes he got dark
When he'd go "Pois-ning Pigeons In The Park."
Tom skewered current events, attitudes and our mores
Mark Russell did it in more mod-rate ways
Capitol Steps raised satire to a shining art
We laughed as they upset the apple cart
Did you like country music? Then your fav-rite has to be
Homer and Jethro's rube insanity.
Pinkard and Bowden slay me - it's just in my blood,
Don't forget Ben Colder and Cleddus Judd.
Weird Al is now the standard, he's as sly as any fox.
I love when he plays rock on his squeeze box!
Now I have lots of heroes who bring me delight
It's all you good folks here on amiright!
I'll try to salute each of you sometime in the future ;D

I listened to all of the above as a child, and as an adult. I hope their influence shows up just a little bit in my own attempts at the art form they did so well.
Great song OMR!!!
Great songs and artists to be remembered(and parodied!!!)
Ha! Hit it right on the spot! My Sunday nights listening to Dr. Demento affected me more than I thought, or did he attract certain personality types? I'll have to check for his web site again, but dial-up is a pain. I have an old Spike Jones video somewhere too. Maniacs! Thanks!
Enjoyed this! My dad introduced us to Freberg, Jones, Sherman and Homer and Jethro pretty much right from the cradle. I'd also have to add Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Dr. Suess, Ogden Nash, Lewis Carroll, and John Ciardi-- just off the top of my head. :D
Great tribute to all parody heroes! Mine is (and will always be) Weird Al Yankovic! I grew up with his parodies. I got bit by the parody bug since kindergarten, grade school, high school, and college. I performed parodies either at talent shows and/or at pep rallies. The first songs I spoofed was "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Wheels on the Bus" during my kindergarten years. Oh, and you're one of my parody heroes too! I got others on AIR too numerous to name! Saluting 555's to you!
Sir, this is YABA . . . DABA . . . Doo ! Dear FredFlint is my cartoon favorite . . . with HuckleBerry Hound as my 2nd choice! . . . "Oh, my Darlin' ". . . ((x))
All the above...good question
@metaphorsbwithu: ROFL nick!
OMR: Alfred E. Neumann and Mad Magazine in general. I could still recite some of their parodies, but fortunately for everyone, won't.

Great idea n' lexecution, OMR... I love all those greats you included!
My influences outside of AmIRight include Allan Sherman, Tom Lehrer, Weird Al, Cletus T. Judd, "Mad" and "Cracked" magazines, National Lampoon and Dr. Demento. Within AmIRight, they include Alvin, AFW, Guy DiRito, John Barry, Stan Hall (where the HECK did he go?), Tommy Turtle, and Spaff.com. For your effort, I will salute you with 5s straight across.
