The Lyrics

Get this- late in WW2 the US experiments with a hydrogen peroxide torpedo meant to look like a shark!!! An oddball weapon, it was made of stainless steel and rubber with HP driving a small turbine geared to the prop. It was supposed to protect Allied convoys and take out German prowling U-boats. It was tested once but blew up by itself in the Atlantic! It was called the Snarky after its inventor, Edward Snarky of the USN.
The Snarky, the Snarky
Stainless steel and rubber war toy
The Snarky, the Snarky
For protection of convoys

The Snarky, the Snarky
Only one was ever deployed
The Snarky, the Snarky
Blew itself up- was destroyed!

Hydrogen peroxide Snarky
Germans thought it was “malarkey”
Note; the Germans used HP for submarine propulsion and had their own HP torpedos, one of which was used by a Type XXIII Elecktroboot in 1945 against a target. The Germans also worked on a supercavitating torpedo long before the Russians and currently have a modern one that can hit 249 knots (made by Diehl BGT)!!!

Short and sweet--not at all snarky.

Still haven't figured out the WHY the US wanted it to look like a shark in Atlantic waters! The Germans made sub decoys that looked liked fake U-boat conning towers so that destroyers would ram it and be blown up! But then again the US invented Bat Bombs in WW2 and the pidgeon guided missile! Postwar the British and US experimented with German HP turbines for subs but failed (too unpredictable and dangerous). Germany's last subs would have used them for AIP and high speed. Germans were first with supercavitating torpedos in WW2 and now the Russians and Chinese have them, the Chinese proposing a ludicrous 3000 mph supercavitating submarine!!! Germans have fastest torp at 249 knots as experimental (normal are wire guided STN-Atlas DM-5s)...

I have heard that HP is an ingredient in "Mother of Satan". A shark-shaped torpedo would be quite a novelty. A friend of mine once unearthed a story about a wartime experiment in which the Marine Corps trained dogs on Japanese-American volunteers in the hope that the dogs would be able to track Japanese soldiers hiding in caves on the Pacific islands. War brings out the weird and wacky in certain "creative" minds.
