The Lyrics

At the beginning of WW2 Germany had the largest military transport fleet of any nation, but neglected to properly replace the aging Ju-52s, Ju-90 series, Ju-252s and 352s, DFS-230s, and Ar-232s at their disposal. The Ar-232 was called the Tausendfussler (Millipede) due to its high floatation 22 main wheels that could even cross trenches. It had a high wing and unobstructed cargo bay that could carry 5 tons + soldiers. It had a cruise speed of just under 200 mph to a range of 700 miles. For protection, it had 2x 13mm MG-131s and a dorsal turret with a 20mm MG-151/20. The soldiers could also fire MG-34s through the side windows for all-round coverage. The rear cargo doors were at truck height for easy unloading and one special mission to kill Stalin used this type for infiltration of the USSR. But only 22 were ever made instead of hundreds. the Germans tended to use many aircraft as multirole and that included transports. As the war progressed more and more fighters were needed for the air war and so the Bf 109s and Fw-190s sucked up 55,000 aircraft by themselves. The only new major transports introduced that were powered were the Me-323 Gigants, augmenting everything from He-111Zs to Junkers transports. The huge piston and jet transports never appeared leaving smaller planes like the Ar-232 to fill gaps in coverage.
Arado 2-3-2
worked out fine

Replacement for the Tante Ju
High wing flyin’
Delivery strivin’

5 tons, could handle it
Was Eastern Front bound
Dorsal turret deadly
With 131s shot aircraft down

[MGs fired from windows circled round]

Arado 2-3-2
worked out fine
For time

Far too few
Far too few
Far too few
In wartime were produced
Used here and there
And emergencies
Only 22

[Special Ops use]

Millipede
Arado 2-3-2
worked out fine
(Had no chance to succeed)

I've seen photos of Ju.52's being used as bombers during the Spanish Civil War. Last week the old movie channel ran "Valkyrie". Two nice Ju.52's in flight, one painted as Hitler's personal plane. Couple of Bf. 109 escorts. The Arado 232 has a rather oddly shaped fuselage. Looks somewhat flimsy. The comparison to a bug is easy to imagine. Assassinating Stalin would have been quite a coup. I've heard that he came close to doing himself in when he heard the Germans had invaded Russia. Imagine, Hitler betrayed him!

I've always questioned "Valkyrie" b/c during the war Hitler used Fw-200s as Fuhrerflugzeug with Baur as pilot. The earlier Ju-52s were from his early political career. His emergency aircraft was supposed to be the Ju-390 but the SS blocked Baur from it; instead, Baur had to plan to use a Bv-222 for sea exit to Norway. Had Hitler tried to escape from Berlin it is possible that he could have taken a Ju-52 to JG-1 and then Ju-90 to Norway as well. The Bv-222 was chosen b/c the Fw-300 was never built and it ran on diesel fuel so it could be refueled at sea by U-boat!
