The Lyrics

In the 1960s the CIA developed a high-speed recon aircraft under the codename OXCART. This became the Lockheed A-12 Archangel which was the forerunner of the latter-derived SR-71 Blackbird. It was made of titanium with a black stealth paint coating and powerful J58 turborams @ 32,000 lb st each giving it a speed of Mach 3.35 at 80,000 ft. Max ceiling was 95,000 ft. It was not a purpose-designed stealth aircraft but did possess it anyway due to low CS of the nose together with a blended fuselage. The inlet spikes directed the shockwave at speed into the engine and also diverted air away from the chines for stability. The craft had a pilot for flying and LSO for launching the upper-carried D-21A drone. But due to a mid-air collision, the D-21B was later adapted to be launched from the B-52. A-12s that carried the drone on recon missions were desingated M-21 "Mother Goose". They performed recon over N Vietnam, China, and other hot spots. Due to turning strategic recon over to the USAF by 1968, the A-12 design led to the SR-71 with a slightly different configuration, engines, and the RSO replaced the LSO. The D-21 drone was not retained. In all, 15 A-12s were built with 2 used as M-21s. They covered the Far East and other global hot spots (most of which remain classified). The aircraft was also at Groom Lake (Area 51). Another name for the bird was "Titanium Goose"

It first flew in ‘62
Was no denyin’
CIA flyin’

There was demand for it
Over three times sound
Russian missiles deadly
Powers U-2 had been shot down

High climb

How it flew
How it flew
How it flew
Mach 3.35
To anywhere

At height it thrived

Another plane I had never heard of before. Amazing what could be done in the early days before digital technology. Did they save any for museums.
