The Lyrics
Marine First Sgt. Dan Daly, having already earned one Medal of Honor during the Boxer Rebellion and facing tremendous firepower in the Belleau Wood from German snipers, MG fire, and artillery, decided to make a stand and order a charge against the Germans using only his Colt 1911 pistol. He said these immortal words to his Leatherneck men: “Come on you bastards! Do you wanna live forever?” and led then cursing and screaming, and shooting right into the German lines. The Germans were taken by surprise at the advancing armed horde, and retreated… allowing the Marines to capture the town at the edge of the woods. For his leadership and action Daly was awarded a second Medal of Honor.
