The Lyrics
The traditional German dirndl became popular in the 1800s as country/peasant dress. It then gained popularity in Nazi Germany as a return to traditional rather than contemporary "vulgar" dress coming out of Paris and the US. Postwar, it is popular during Oktoberfest and associated with beer maids, busty beer maids! Then a drop for decades and now a resurgance with designer dirndls out of Munich. Germans are starting to once again reject globalization trends and turn back to tradition. How ironic... or have we seen this before? ;-)

* Hitler and the NSDAP approved of traditional costumes as part of their efforts at cultural and communal restoration. Hitler’s pre-war time in Germany was largely spent with the Volk in festive celebrations and the dirndl was very popular back them with German women and the BDM.
