Song Parodies -> "Leigh's Palindrome Workshop"

Original Song Title:

"The Limerick Song"

Original Performer:

sactoGranny

Parody Song Title:

"Leigh's Palindrome Workshop"

Parody Written by:

Giorgio Coniglio

The Lyrics

Leigh Mercer (pronounced 'Lee', 1893-1977) was credited with the famous palindrome, "A man, a plan, a canal, palindrome." Mercer, an isolated British eccentric, worked during his lifetime at a variety of low-level jobs, and occasionally communicated with journals and contest organizers about wordplay and mathematical puzzles. After his death, notebooks filled with inventive palindromes were discovered. The lyrics describe an apocryphal workshop conducted by Mercer, during which the iconic canal palindrome is almost invented. Note that all capitalized phrases except for the first one are legitimate palindromes. A few of these are reported here for the first time by the author.
"A MAN + A PLAN, A CANAL --
PANACEA: A palindrome, pal?"
My friend Leigh seemed contrite --
"No! The ending's not right.
ZEUS SEES SUEZ -- that seems less LAME, MAL."

"A MAN, A PLAN IF FINAL - PAN-
-AMA works, (like NAME MALE PIPE, LAME MAN!)"
My friend Leigh looked uptight,
"No! It lacks enough bite.
It's ambiv'lent, like NAB, ROB OR BAN."

"AMEN + A PIT, IPANEMA
(Voiced in Portuguese, with no disclaimer)."
Leigh: "No! TIP-TOP POT PIT
Is a much better fit.
But AMEN! ICY CINEMA's lamer."

"A MAR ON A POO -- PANORAMA::
It reverses, but, yes it's poor gRAMMAR"
Leigh groaned, "DAMMIT, I'M MAD;
Stuff those phrases so bad;
NO SIR, PRISON -- that warrants the slammer."

Of course, my limerick medleys are not core parodies. Like most of the stuff posted here, they are just lyric substitutions by those not talented enough to write their own music. There have been very few parodies posted here since the apparent demise of AlSilver, only occasional bona fide well-subbed satires by JB, Patrick and now the reincarnated Guy. At least this current preoccupation of mine pays attention to pacing, true rhyming, wordplay and attempts at humour (and except for the current posting, most of it has been vetted and edited elsewhere). We should anticipate another series of online lectures by the ghost of Ag+Al+ on the nature of Parody; but pending that, you might view the collection of "Canal Palindromes" on our blogsite.

I ran into Al Silver last night. He's in bad shape. Very bad shape, I tell ya. He's been sober since April. Turned out his doctor Vinny Boombacci found blood in his alcohol stream. Now he's completely disoriented. He walks on Fifth Avenue protesting that Coolidge isn't his president. And he's right, you know? What are you kidding? He used to be religious. I mean very observant. Not any more. He was strict Russian Orthodox. He observed Smirnoff every day. And retirement? He can't take it any more. He carries blank signs in protest marches... He forgets what he's protesting! It isn't easy for him. It's never been easy. Money? Forget it. He has another sign... Will Work For Respect.

Oops! As recanting on previous stances is a highlight of the week, I will add the amazing oeuvres of Phil Alexander and Bob Gomez to the list of skilful and amusing parodies presented here. Sorry if there are a few others I have missed. And 'Granddaddy', you must have written something good sometime, replete with your bravado punctuation style.
Braverman - November 13, 2016 - Report this comment
Mr. Coniglio, wouldn't a sarcastic "bravura," be better than "bravado"? These words are of Italian origin. FYI.
GC - November 13, 2016 - Report this comment
You are a braver man than me. But, 'bravado' is a Spanish word implying affectation of bravery, therefore already incorporating some sarcasm. (Hint - Italian words seldom end in -ado), FYI.
Braverman - November 13, 2016 - Report this comment
"Bravado" ultimately traces to the Old Italian adjective bravo, meaning "courageous" or "wild." Given its meaning, it's hard to see how "bravado" applies, with or without sarcasm, to punctuation style. On the other hand, it is "bravura," meaning "florid brilliant style," which surely is more applicable and has the built-in sarcasm. (I used the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Unfortunately, both words are listed as nouns, which makes them both unsuitable in your sentence.)
By calling Granddaddy's punctuation style "bravura," he is ludicrously put in the same company as the great e. e. cummings. That, I think, is the rhetorical effect you want to achieve.
Though it sounds pretentious, it should be "You are a braver man than I." An "am" at the end of the sentence is implied.
This concludes my nightly trolling in the guise of a prick.
CML - November 14, 2016 - Report this comment
Though it may sound pretentious, it should be "This concludes my nightly trolling." The fact that you are being a prick while trolling is implied.
GC - November 14, 2016 - Report this comment
Bravo, Braverman! But bravado is NOT an Italian word. Discrediting Hispanic culture/language at this point in time should be avoided. BTW, what have you been sentenced for? Also, in my native Canadian style, I would have embellished the adjectival phrase 'bravado-punctuation' with a hyphen; but I have been criticized by American editors for overhyphenating. I must agree for once with CML; "in the guise of" seems redundant. Please return to your bottle of Smirnoff.

Braverman - November 14, 2016 - Report this comment
For the third time, I am saying that "bravado" has its ORIGIN in the Italian. It is not an Italian word as of this writing. As for you accusing me of discrediting Hispanic culture/language, that is completely unwarranted and insulting. The common denominator here is your inability to read accurately.
Puzzled by the Smirnoff reference, I searched this thread. Apparently, you think I am that other troll Rodney. I am not. I am also not Granddaddy. You need to straighten out your trolls. I am Braverman, the Prick — and proud of it.
As for you and CML asserting that trolls are, by definition, pricks, that is a damnable stereotype. A real troll, using a variety of pseudonyms to throw readers off his scent, has mischief-making as his main goal. However, there are those who write careful, thoughtful, informative comments — often more so than familiar veterans. Why we choose not to use a consistent handle has to do with shyness, not with disruptive intent. For example, "Rodney" did a very funny send-up of Rodney Dangerfield. I wish it was I who wrote it!

@Norman: Previous postings on this site involved these songs with lyrics composed mostly of palindromes:"Gnats Sang; Gnus Stung", "X66X"; "Palindromes of Evil" and "Sin and Redemption". I presume that the majority of participants on this thread are merely revelling in the joy of the established palindrome repertoire; although palindromes are odd, amusing and funky, I agree that they are not necessarily satiric or even singable. But the majority of the present song-lyrics and of the edited comments in the numbered list are take-offs on the classics, satirical to the extent possible within the severe limitations of bidirectional writing. This is an important legacy which we will leave as humorists. Why not join in, and sing in either direction?

Take a look at the scoring on your ridiculous non-parody. Palindromes are your hobby, your obsession? That's none of my business and don't force them on me. Take them to where they're welcome. Seeker of Truth and Beauty - December 14, 2016 - Report this comment
Creating a palindrome is a puzzle-solving stunt. It's a degenerate use of words and letters. Nevertheless, words (and paint) can be used unconventionally and experimentally to produce new views of truth and beauty (e.g., Beckett and Picasso), but these are not likely to be created under the constraints of a palindrome. Also, it would require the skill of a good writer steeped in the fundamentals of his art. Still, if you insist and persist in these exercises, know that a basic requirement for a palindrome isn't only bidirectionality, but coherence and readability. At the latter, Sarah and all her alter egos fail miserably. A stuffy, huffy reply would not be appreciated, but undoubtedly you cannot be dissuaded.

Glad to know that some common sense still exists on this site. The Doctor, Sarah, and cohorts perpetuate the lie that working in palindromes is somehow indicative of intelligence regardless of their misapplication on a parody site. Most are unintelligible and not suited for singing; therefore, they do not belong here. But the abusers persist and have now been reduced to imbeciles who are spamming the thread and comments section daily. Finis...
