The Lyrics

Things That I Love To Hate

Once, I was a calmer lad
But, now I’m always getting mad
I have no patience, and you see
When I look at society
I see so many things are wrong
So, now I offer you this song…
Sit-back…relax…while I relate
Some of the things I love to hate…

Texting teens in speeding cars
Lit cigars and coffee-bars
Sub-prime loans and mood enhancers
TV shows where “stars” are dancers
Country Music…Ken G’s saxes
Taxes on Brazilian waxes
When my girlfriend says she’s “late”
Are some of the things I love to hate…

Trying to stay trim and slendered
Learning that your date’s transgendered
Sarah Palin bumper stickers
Limbaugh lovers…puppy kickers
Brangelina…Donald Trumpers
Darwin bashers…Bible thumpers
Men in speedos…overweight…
Are more of the things I love to hate…

Kraftwerk, Yanni, Enya, Bjork
And, all the teams based in New York
German Measles…acidosis…
When your Gram has halitosis
Left-wing spenders…Right-wing whiners
Riggers, wiggers…Race maligners
Screaming brats that stay-up late
Are many more things I love to hate…

[slowly with reflection…]

As I read my list above
I wonder what I love to “love”
My life, my home, my family
A clever well-paced parody
As this competition ends
I’m glad to count you all as friends
Time to go…it’s getting late
And sappiness is one thing…I…hate…

Way to go out with a bang! "As this competition ends/ I’m glad to count you all as friends" Awwwwwwhhhh..... "And sappiness is one thing…I…hate…" lol. Loved it!!! I hate most of those things too except for Enya, I've always liked her work.

This is FABulous, IB...I love every line, but "Learning that your date’s transgendered" and "And, all the teams based in New York" stood out especially for me. Just beyond impressive. I'm so glad that this competition has allowed (...forced? ; )...) me to become more familiar with your stuff. Seriously...you're a GREAT writer and have made me laugh again and again. I hope it continues. =)

That is such a great song to run off lists. I have to try and tackle it one day, but I'm sure I am not going to be no where near the mastery you've displayed here. Very enjoyable!!

Thanks Matty, Leo, alvin, Arwen, MasonR, Mark, JB, Phil, AFW and Andy.
This is a fun song to parody. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend that you do...

For some reason, people seem to think this is a throwaway song to parody. Speaking as someone who has tried and failed multiple times to make each line sharp and hilarious, the fact that you managed to do all that AND top it off with a lol-worthy ending makes me all the more impressed with this. I could sip your haterade all day. Five'd.

Yeah, great summation IB. I will miss the Ages, and you captured that beautifully in the last verse. Many great lines, subs, pacing was awesome and wit was sharp.
I happen to like Kraftwerk, or maybe I just side with them whenever I hear they're riff in a song was ripped off as a new ring-tone or for a rap, or coldplay song... again.
Awesome again, see you on the thread.

(Ages2) Although I take issue with the "Darwin bashers, Bible thumpers" line given my personal beliefs, you more than made up for it with the last verse. D'awwwwwww I feel so fuzzy inside...ahem. 555 for you!

AGES...I can't really say it better than I already said it, IB...I'm just so glad to have gotten to know your stuff! Great job on this and throughout the contest!

(Ages) Hey, what's that crack about New York teams! What are you, a Bostonian? 1-1-1! ...just kidding. Some good laughs, nice list, nice read, nice greeting to us at the end. I think you fudged here and there on the pacing, but so what? 555 Luftbalons. BTW, my security code says NJD--New Jersey Devils?

Thanks Emi, Glen, BPC, Arwen and Melanie.
Arwen...I feel the same way about getting to know you and your work better.
Melanie...I knew my crack about New York teams would get you riled. Yes, I am a Bostonian (though I escaped over the border to NH years ago...Live Free Or Die)

I've made many comments on list parodies over the years...this is how it's done! Not just a list, a song where each item in the list is funny! Especially the lines about New York teams :) (Hey, I'm from Baltimore)

Jaw just dropped. . .I'm not normally a fan of list parodies, as has been noted, but this has become the third total exception (Along with Matty's I Have No Careers and 2nz's Wannause Oxy-Morons) The "Learning that your date’s transgendered Sarah Palin bumper stickers" was just too friggin funny--that whole stanza was. . .also dropped my jaw with the third stanza. ..I'm just in awe. . .Fantastic parody by a parodist who easily rivals the best of us. . .Great ending as well, and a great end to the competition, good job IB

I thought this was a good list. It left off a few things that I hate, but it's not MY list. :-)

I would give you ninety-nine 5s, but three will have to do. Very nicely done.

(SOTM) Very nicely done. Very clever rhyme schemes. Who knew that all of this stuff could irk one person, or work so well to an 80s one hit wonder. I guess I'll subtract from your list and give you the 5's you want! :D

Excellent work but as someone from NY, I'm not happy with your "teams based in New York" crack. "99 Words for Boobs" is still the gold standard parody of this song.
