One of my all-time favorite comic books was "Herbie", about a fat little boy named Herbie Popnecker who was secretly a superhero known as "The Fat Fury." His costume consisted of red longjohns, a bath towel for a cape, and a plunger on his head. He fought bad guys with an arsenal of lollipops, each of which had a different purpose (flying, bopping, etc.) Herbie was a world-famous celebrity and heartthrob of women everywhere, a fact known by everyone except his eternally disppointed father, who thought of him as a "big, fat nothing."

Fly Herbie fly
Make the baddies cry
For takin' on the Fat Fury

The boy who's always dining in the kitchen
Weighs about a half a ton
His father's always whining
That he has a big, fat nothing for a son

Fly Herbie fly
Make your daddy sigh
He doesn't know any better
So fly Herbie fly

The boy received a warning from the White House
Of a menace on the loose
He squeezed into his longjohns, donned his plunger
Didn't bother with his shoes

Fly Herbie fly
Take a ham on rye
You don't know when you'll have dinner
So fly Herbie fly

In Hollywood, a detour
As Liz Taylor throws him down and leaps on top
But Herbie tells her "later"
Or he'll bop her now "with this here lollipop"

Fly Herbie fly
Make the ladies cry
When job is done you can get 'er
So fly Herbie fly

A super-powered villain named The Atom
Threatens city with a bomb
A lollipop for bopping's all it takes
To send him crying to his mom

Fly Herbie fly
Make the baddies cry
For taking on the Fat Fury
So fly Herbie fly

Fly, fly, fly Herbie
Make 'em wonder why
They messed with Herbie Popnecker
So fly Herbie fly

Fly, fly, fly
Make your daddy sigh
He's never gonna know better
So fly Herbie fly

I will bop you back to the Stone Age
With this lollipop
I will bop you back to the Stone Age
Bop you with this lollipop
This here lollipop
Ooh, I will bop you with this lolly
This here lollipop

It was really cool to learn about a new crazy Superhero which sounds like he could be one of my favorites. I need to check him out because he sounds so obscure and goofy like an even more obscure Plastic Man (Plastic Man being one of my favorite Superheroes without a doubt!)

This one takes me back to when I was a boy. My brother and I used to get on our jammies and makeshift capes (our Supersuits), take a few Dynamints (our Superpills) and then try to run-jump up to the top bunk (flying). I missed half the time and hurt myself! Thanks for the memories of "Superhero" play and of the old bunk beds- 555!
