The Lyrics

This parody is actually a 100% true story from my life a decade or so back. I was living in Japan for a couple years and working sorta part time for a certain Japanese firearm manufacturer. I am probably the only American ever to design a complete firearm which is patented ONLY in virtually gunless Japan. I was having a lot of fun at my job there and in Japan generally but eventually got divorced from my Japanese 1st wife (for reasons unrelated to fun) and thus lost my spouse visa to stay in the country. My employer there was supposed to help me get an engineer visa so I could go back to work for them full time and permanently, but assigned the most totally useless person in the whole company to be responsible for the paperwork. I had to return to America "for 3 months" to wait for the result, but kept my apartment in Japan during that time. After 8 months of waiting in America my visa application was finally denied. So, I lost my wife, I had no job, my bank account in Japan was drained dry from automatically paying rent and utilities on an unoccupied apartment there for 8 months, my savings in America were gone from living expenses here for 8 months, I was not eligible for unemployment benefits anywhere in the USA, auto insurance companies wanted to charge me double as a high risk because there was no record of me buying auto insurance for years, my Japanese patent was worthless and only served to prevent me from later applying for a patent elsewhere, my dog had just died, and to top it off I still had to fly back to Japan and clean out my apartment. And after that I was looking forward to at best returning to some ordinary boring life with an ordinary boring job. So I wrote this song.
There is a land in the Far East
They call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin of many an American
And God, I know I'm one

My mother was a housewife
She never earned a cent
My father was an engineer
Working for the gubberment

Now the only thing an engineer needs
Is a pocket protector right here
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's got something to en-gine-eer

Oh mothers, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
'Cause there ain't no money to be made
In trying to design a gun

Well, I got one foot on the gangway
The other foot's on the plane
I'm goin' back to Mi-ish-ee-gan
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a land in the Far East
They call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin of many an American
And God, I know I'm one

Great for the karaoke bars!

Not bad. You have what we call a few pacing errors. For best comic effect the sub needs to, at the very least, have the same # of syllables as the original words. "American" doesn't even remotely "sing" like "poor boy" On the other hand, "gai-jiin" has same syllables and intonation as "poor boy", so that's the sub to use if you're ever going to sing this at a karaoke

Actually I think the jarring effect of "American" with the wrong number of syllables can ADD to the comic effect, if you tilt your head sideways slightly and bulge out your eyeballs just right as you quickly blurt it out with a certain uncertain tone of voice. Matter of opinion, I guess.

A personal anecdote with an explanatory intro as long as the song. What's not to like?. Next time follow CML's advice, with rigorous scansion, and when you have built a repertoire, try some variations.

Anything is funny if you can sell it as funny. If you get them to laugh at it, it's funny
