The Lyrics

If you haven’t followed this story, the University of Chicago Dean of Students included the following in a welcome letter to incoming freshmen last month: "Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called 'trigger warnings,' we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual 'safe spaces' where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.” This parody is about two students who are having difficulty adapting.
In this Chicago university
Where profs can freely opine
The Dean tells us there’ll be no trigger warnings

Halloween costumes won’t be pretty
There’s no guide for what’s taboo
Hard to know what we’re supposed to do

Watch my classmates’ widespread debatin’
Hear folks who don’t think my way
Feel I’m sellin' or givin' my soul away
Oh yes I know it

(Yeah) You’ve been hurtin' so bad
(Yeah) I've been hurtin' too, really
(Yeah) Every night and day
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

We gotta head to a safe space
Yeah it's the first thing we better do
We gotta create a safe space
Out here, there’s far too much strife for me and you

Profs expect us to spell correctly
They grade us on writing too
Don’t find no “grammar choice” latitude

Watch as you read in bed complainin’
Huck Finn book shouldn’t be assigned
Mark Twain’s writin’ of slavin’ is out of line

I know you’ve been gripin’ so much
(Yeah) I've been gripin' too, really
(Yeah) Every day really
(Yeah) Whoa!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

We can’t learn in an unsafe space
Cause it's the last thing we’re skilled to do
We gotta be taught with more grace
Where anquish is not rife for me and you
Somewhere maybe, somehow I know it

We gotta get out of this place
Yeah it's the best thing we’ll ever do
We gotta head to a safe space
Where there’s a scrubbed clean life for me and you

Believe me really
I know it really
You know it too

5's! I've had this song and a few others on the back burner for a few years now. Haven't been able to work them out yet. Good job on yours!
