The Lyrics

Short one about the German paras that held Monte Cassino for months, delaying Allied troops in the MTO. The fighting earned the German paras the nickname "Green Devils" by the Allies that had to mount four major attacks to dislodge them from the rubble of the bombed-out monastery on the hill. Allies lost 55,000 troops to German 20,000 and 105,000 troops total in the Rome campaign...
I am an Fallschirmjaeger for the Reich
And I’m holding the main road
In the rubble of Monte Cassino, on the way to Rome

I hear the incoming artillery fire
I can hear it all the time
But as a Fallschirmjager, I’m still holding this line

I know we’ll soon need evacuation
But Hitler wants us to remain
‘Cause if the Allies reach Rome
It would be a strategic gain

And we need to more than want to
And we want to buy more time
And the “Green Devils” are still holding this line

Yes, confinement is the worst punishment you can give someone, sometimes, even worse than death itself! Great story and song! 555! :-)

I was once approached by a fellow who was writing a book about Cassino. He wanted me to translate an article by French General Juin, who commanded a regiment of Moroccan mountain troops during the campaign. The destruction of the famed monastery was another of war's frequent tragedies, but when you look at the photos, you can see how the Allied troops must have felt with that great bulk looming over them, certain the Germans were using it as an observation post. In fact, they were not, but no one knew until it was too late.
