Upbeat Songs With Depressing Lyrics:

"Nuttin' For Christmas"
The Lyrics:
I broke my bat on Johnny's head.
Somebody snitched on me.
Why:
None of the lyrics to this song can be called happy, but these two lines are the worst. Yet the song is sung to a lilting tune that could fit a more worthy Christmas song. The contrast of the lilting tune to the awful lyrics is made all the more poignant by the fact that this is played on the radio and store sound systems and mixed right in with other Christmas songs during "the season to be jolly". Incidentally, wonder who could have snitched on the singer? Perhaps Johnny himself, provided he ever regained consciousness? Or maybe the paramedics who came to treat Johnny's life-threating injuries, provided they arrived in time to see the perpetrator with his broken bat still in his hands? One thing almost makes me laugh in spite fo all this -- While searching lyrics sites to make sure I had the lyrics correct, I saw that several sites classify this among "Christmas Carols". In school, I learned that the term "Christmas Carols" is to be reserved for songs relating to the Nativity or otherwise to the "sacred" meaning of Christmas. Other Christmas songs, so I learned back then (the ones I then knew including the likes of 'Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer', 'Here Comes Santa Claus', and 'White Christmas') should be more properly referred to as "Christmas Songs". There was confused useage of the terms then that the teacher sought to clariify. But surely she must be "turning over in her grave" now at the thought of anyone calling THIS a "Christmas Carol". At least songs like "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" and "Christmas At Ground Zero" have some measure of dark humor to offer. But this has all the darkenss with no real humor.
