The Lyrics

(instrumental opening)

Goodbye, Eddie Fitz
though I never saw you at all.
You had the strength to bring the ore.
Through the Great Lakes always hauled.

Hauled through all your crew's work
as their muscles felt the strain.
They left the mill in Wisconsin
never knowing coming pain.

And it seems to me you lost your life
when you were handled by the wind
never knowing who to cling to
when the waves crashed in.

And I should've watched the news then
but I was just a kid.
I never heard your song was played
'til an oldies station did.

Gitchee Gumee's touch
the toughest game you ever played.
Your song sung by a superstar
when your homeport, never made.

Twenty-nine men died
and the press wondered of you.
You could have made it to Whitefish Bay
but it seems you never knew.

And it seems to me you lost your life
when you were handled by the wind
never knowing who to cling to
when the waves crashed in.

And I should've watched the news then
but I was just a kid.
I never heard your song was played
'til an oldies station did.

Goodbye, Eddie Fitz
though I never saw you at all.
You had the strength to bring the ore.
Through the Great Lakes always hauled.

Goodbye, Eddie Fitz
from the young man with the parodies he wrote.
So far live just in cyberspace.
I'm not a professional throat.

And it seems to me you lost your life
when you were handled by the wind
never knowing who to cling to
when the waves crashed in.

And I should've watched the news then
but I was just a kid.
I never heard your song was played
'til an oldies station did.

Welcome back! Are you trying to put ideas in my head? A marvelous rendition of a poignant song that has been associated with the loss of lives and the potential they represented. I was living in northern Indiana the night the Fitzgerald went down, and I recall that it was raining very heavily in a way I was not accustomed to from Kansas. I think there was a major storm system that covered much of the upper Midwest and parts of Canada at that time.
