Real Places Mentioned in Songs:
"Sausalito Summernight"
The Lyrics: Hot summer night in Sausalito Can't stand the heat another mile Let's drop a quarter in the meter And hit the sidewalk for a while I'll have a burger and a root beer You feed the heap some multi-grade A shot of premium to boot, dear We'll get across the Golden Gate
Another mile or two to Frisco 200 gallons from L.A. The engine's thumpin' like a disco We ought to dump her in the bay Why: Diesel was a four man group from the Netherlands that had a New Wave #25 U.S. hit (according the Billboard Magazine's HOT 100 charts) with the song, "Sausalito Summernight", in the fall of 1981. The Sausalito in the title and also in the second verse (one of two verses I have posted here, along with the third verse) refers to the town of Sausalito which is on San Francisco Bay in Marin County, CA just north of San Francisco. The group's members were, Rob Vunderink (guitar/vocals), Mark Boon (guitar), Frank Papendrect (bass) and Pim Koofman (drum/keyboards). "Sausalito Summernight" and Diesel were also nominated for a 1982 Grammy (I do believe they lost to Sheena Easton) for Best New Artist. Also mentioned in the song are the Golden Gate Bridge across San Francisco to Oakland, CA, San Francisco itself (as Frisco), Los Angeles (as L.A.) and San Francisco Bay itself (we're they wanted to dump the vehicle that was "thumpin' like a disco". Diesel originally formed in the late 1970's, and had better success in Europe than in the U.S. They released two albums before dispanding. The album that "Sausalito Summernight" is from also has the name of a well-known (although infamous) neighborhood of Los Angeles, "Watts" as in "Watts In A Tank".
