Elton John, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up for you
I'm not a present for your French New Open
This boy's too young to be singing
His song, ooooh, ah, ah
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the cabin built out in the woods
I'm huntin' the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond Yellow Brick Road
Ah, ah
And what do you think you'll do then?
I better shoot down the plane
Where it'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffin' for tippers like you
On the ground, ah, ah
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing
The blues, ah, ah
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
Ah, ah
What do you think you'll do then?
I bet they'll shoot down the plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffin' for titbits like you
On the ground, ah, ah
Even with the original handwritten lyrics (image) in front of me, it is clear Elton has changed some of Bernie's words. The classic example being there is no way he sings 'I bet that'll shoot down your plane', as there are too many syllables. He changes it to 'I bet they'll shoot down the plane' as it sings better. Not that you could even use that lyric in today's post-Lockerbie world. Ah, censorship. Of course, at the time, I never even ONCE thought about it being about shooting down a plane - even with my misheard lyrics I knew that his present situation was detrimental to the subject of the song. Similarly with 'Oh, I've finally decided my future lies beyond (the) yellow brick road'. I've included the 'the' for completeness but it isn't clear. I heard it as if he were singing about the name of a road, eg. Smith Road, hence the caps. Needless to say, I prefer my lyrics as I've been singing these for almost 50 years!
