My understanding by my lyrics is that each of the band members is fighting internally between doing drugs ('life in the street') and finding a better way to rock and roll ('pick and choose'). The classic examples are the two keys to The Sweet's sound - Brian Connolly's fighting (literally) against alcohol vs Andy Scott's cleaner living.
