Story about this misheard lyric by: Mike Appelstein For years I was impressed that Eric B & Rakim drew on Watergate for a rap lyric -- you know, the surreptitious recordings (on magnetic tape, natch), the missing 18 minutes and so forth. I also thought that rhyming 'addiction' and 'Nixon' was a stroke of genius, cementing Rakim's status as hip-hop's lyricist extraordinaire. Then I found out the line referred to mixing down recordings -- still an ok rhyme, but not nearly as much fun as my mishearing! |
