Here's my thinking: "I need Jimi (i.e. Hendrix - original, charismatic guitar god) but I got T-Rex" (at the time of release a glam rock / pop band may have been considered a pale imitation). Although, as it was written by Bowie (as far as we know a friend of Marc Bolan) this would appear harsh on T-Rex.
