Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Steve Earle

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

El Corazón album at
Steve Earle's, "Copperhead Road"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well my name's Conlee Peddamoore
The Real Lyrics:
Well my name is John Lee Pettimore

Steve Earle's, "NYC"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Goin' da Neon City
The Real Lyrics:
Goin' to New York City
The Story: Well, I should have known better since the title of this song is 'NYC' but I had it in my mind that he was saying 'Neon City.' So, then I had in my imagination that he was singing about going to Las Vegas--you know, lots of neon. But, somehow I was still unsettled so I finally looked at the lyrics. Yep, Steve Earle was saying in that intoxicating drawl of his 'Goin' to NYC.' Had this fool fooled. - Submitted by: A.L. Jackson
