Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Cher

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Believe album at Amazon.com
Cher's, "Believe"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you believe in life on the road
The Real Lyrics:
Do you believe in life after love
The Story: My kid sister was singing this song one day at dinner and then she came to that part and sang 'Do you be-lie-ive in life on the road...', and me and my parents started laughing hysterically, though we all agreed that her rendition made more sense than the original. - Submitted by: Punky
Cher's, "Believe"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you believe in love after life?
or
Do you believe in love after love?
The Real Lyrics:
Do you believe in life after love
The Story: My 2 brothers and I had the most vicious and long-running debate over this one., and we all had theories to back up what we thought we heard Cher sing. Mine was 'Do you believe in love after life?' meaning that she still loved Sonny Bono even though he was dead. Jeff's was 'Do you believe in love after love?' meaning that you can still love again even though you once loved and lost someone. David's was 'Do you believe in life after love?' meaning is there hopee after loving someone and loosing them? The right lyrics, of course. - Submitted by: Rosanna
Cher's, "Believe"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you believe in love that is love?
The Real Lyrics:
Do you believe in life after love?
The Story: Looking back, what I thought makes absolutely no sense, but I was 10 when this song was released. It wasn't until many years later when my mom and I were binge-watching Gilmore Girls, and there was an episode where Lorelei was hosting a dinner at her inn, and at one point they're discussing Cher, and Lorelei says "The year of 'do you believe in life after love?'." I had to pause the episode, looked to my mother, and yelled OH MY GOD. - Submitted by: Jake B

Cher's, "Believe"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Do you believe in love? I feel love!
The Real Lyrics:
Do you believe in life after love?
The Story: A few school friends and I were standing at the bus stop when we saw a woman with her headphones on grooving away and singing a song in a dubious register. When she reached this chorus (singing only these lines repeatedly for some strange reason), it was only then I realised what she was singing. I'm sure my friends were the same, because tightly we pursed out lips and turned away surreptitiously in a bid not to laugh. - Submitted by: Loveless

Cher's, "Gypsies, Tramps, And Thieves"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Jim sees tramps and thieves.
or
Dig these tramps and thieves.
The Real Lyrics:
Gypsies, tramps, and thieves
The Story: Here is a song whose title line I misunderstood, despite hearing it often announced on the radio. I had just gotten my driver's license when the song was new, enabling me to listen to pop/rock music to a significant degree for the first time in years. I don't know that my parents ever denounced pop/rock as downright Satanic, but they certainly did scorn it as decadent. So for years prior to my learning to drive, all radios in our house and cars were pretty much permanently tuned to country stations. Being in a car alone for the first time and able to experiment with listening to different types of music, I heard this. I'd vaguely heard of Sonny and Cher, but didn't know they'd broken up. I didn't recognize Cher's name apart from 'Sonny And Cher'. What I must have been hearing the DJ say after this song was, "That was Cher with 'Gypsies, Tramps, And Thieves'". I thought he was saying, "That was Sherwood Gypsies' "Tramps And Thieves'." It never was among my favorite songs. That's in part a good thing. Otherwise, I might have tortured myself searching in vain for records by 'Sherwood Gypsies'! - Submitted by: Angelica Drake

The Misheard Lyrics:
Big steeds trackin' thieves
The Real Lyrics:
Gypsies, tramps, and thieves
The Story: Thanks to amiright.com, I see that I am by no means the only one who ever found these words difficult to understand. The above was my best guess. Now I find that I was no farther off then numerous others. Some people whom I've showed amiright.com to think it is a most extreme trivia site. But I think it performs a most valuable service. Mishearing song lyrics can be quite a source of embarrassment and shame, and some of us mishearers have long suffered in silence. But amiright.com finally brings us out of the closet and helps us realize how universal this secret is. I'll bet everybody has sometimes misheard lyrics! - Submitted by: Sheila Munroe
