Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Bread

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Bread's, "Diary"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I flew to Darien to meet her train
The Real Lyrics:
I found her diary underneath a tree
The Story: This song came out about the time 'You're So Vain,' with its lyric 'You flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see a partial eclipse of the sun.' I supose private planes were in my mind at the time! - Submitted by: Allen Smalling
Bread's, "Diary"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I found her diarrhea beneath a tree.
The Real Lyrics:
I found her diary underneath a tree.
The Story: I was singing it that way after hearing it on the radio, and my friend practically cracked up. I didn't even know what a diary was then. My friend was sure I sang it wrong on purpose, and I think she still is today. She showed me the title on her father's cd to prove what the real lyrics were. - Submitted by: Heidi Jones
Bread's, "It Don't Matter To Me"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There will always be a victoroon
Waiting for you.
The Real Lyrics:
There will always be an empty room
Waiting for you.
The Story: For a long time I thought these were the words to this song. That is, until I asked a coworker, 'What the heck is a victoroon?'. Then to my embarassment, I am corrected. - Submitted by: SGFan
Bread's, "Make It with You"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And if I choose the one I'd like to help me through.
I'd like to bake it with you.
The Real Lyrics:
And if I choose the one I'd like to help me through.
I'd like to make it with you.
The Story: I have the same thing about the line of lyrics of this song. It sounding like that the cake is baking. How David Gates eating cake and drinking water? About this song: Featured on its second studio album "On the Waters" (1970), it would be their only number-one hit on Billboard's Pop Chart as well as reaching #2 in Canada, #5 in the UK, and #7 in Australia and later was certified Gold. - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji
