Comments:
"Edelweiss" was the final song written by the great Broadway songwriting duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was written for the Broadway musical nine months before Hammerstein was to die (August 1960). Edelweiss is a white flower that grows throughout Europe -- in the Alps (but is protected). Edelweiss is part of the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and it's scientific name is Leontopodium alpinum. Edelweiss in Greek means "lion's paw". In the movie "The Sound Of Music" there are two versions of "Edelweiss" sung, although the most popular would seem to be the solo version sung by actor Christopher Plummer.
