It's a heartache
Nothing but a heartache
Love him till your arms break
Then he'll let you down
Although most U.S. audiences remember Welch pop/rock/folk singer Bonnie Tyler more for her huge #1 hit of 1983, "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and it's endearing music video -- many more of us remember (as I do when I was 14 years old) first hearing Bonnie Tyler singing, "It's A Heartache" which was her first smash hit in the U.S. back in early 1978. It has an upbeat beat and is very danceable (a matter of fact it appeared on many shows of the time that featured disco dancing -- including, but not limited to "American Bandstand" and even in discos). But it is by far one of the most depressing songs about a woman loving a man I can think of. Just the lyrics I have posted up above which are the second verse and also are repeated near the end of the song would probably turn most women away from loving a man with the fact that Bonnie suffers from her love for a man with actual physical harm (her arms break -:); poor woman) when he let's her down. Despite it's depressing lyrics, or maybe because it's upbeat beat the song, from Bonnie's second lp, "Natural Forces", reached to #4 on the U.K. singles chart and #3 on the U.S. pop charts (Billboard Magazine's HOT 100 charts) and #1 in Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada and much of continential Europe (including Sweden, Norway and France), and that was after Ronnie Spector and Juice Newton both cut versions of the song and failed with it. Also, Bonnie Tyler with "It's A Heartache" was compared favorably to Rod Stewart with many critics calling her "The Female Rod Stewart". Ironically and showing it's enduring appeal, in 2006, Rod Stewart would record a version of "It's A Heartache".
