The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And past your door,
but you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere,
like outer space
You've found some better place
And I miss you,
like the deserts miss the rain
And I miss you,
like the deserts miss the rain
Why They're Nonsensical:
This song has always stuck under my craw. First of all, she is talking about some distant heartache that she can't get over. That's all well and good, but how is that like deserts missing the rain? Deserts are created and continue to expand due to an utter lack of rain. I doubt if a desert (if it could obtain consciousness in the human sense) would miss the rain at all, since it would cease to be a desert and instead become some sort of lush environment. If you move further along, you see the lyrics: And the years have proved to offer, nothing since you've moved You're long gone, but I can't move on She can't move on? The Sahara grows by a mile each year. It moves on. So do most deserts. She clearly is talking about longing, and no desert (or any entity) longs for something that would make it cease to be. Stupid euro pop bands.
