Nat King Cole's, "The Christmas Song"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
Why They're Nonsensical:
Humans are perhaps the only animal species who ever consciously learn how to fly, and in becoming aircraft pilots is when they do so. For other animals that ever learn how to fly, it may not be such a conscious process that calling it "Knowing how to fly" is clearly pertinent. That puts humans in a category of animal species pretty much all by themselves. A second category is animals that ever fly on their own, including most birds, most insects, and most, if not all, bats. A third category of animals for that purpose, is animals that never fly. That last category includes all non-human mammals other than bats. Although some mammals have names seeming to indicate that they can fly, generally that refers to gliding, not true flight. Those include "Flying Lemurs," (which are not true lemurs), and "Flying Squirrels, (which in fact ARE true squirrels), but both of those are gliders, not true fliers. Exceptionally "Flying Foxes" are true fliers, as they are a type of bat, not true foxes. So the non-flying category of non-human mammals other than bats includes reindeer. They probably never imagine an ability to fly, so posing the question of whether they "know" how to fly (or don't know either) has questionable pertinence at best.
