The Carpenters', "Goodbye To Love"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
So I've made my mind up
I must live my life alone
I may find that
there is someone to believe in
I must live my life alone
I may find that
there is someone to believe in
Why They're Nonsensical:
In a close analysis the lady in this number doesn't quite know whether she's saying goodbye to love or not.She begins by saying nobody ever cared whether she lived or died. That's quite a statement in itself. She goes on to say there have been too many false dawns on the love front, and can't take this any more,so it's best to forget finding a good relationship. That there are no more chances,no more tomorrows as regards meeting a nice guy. She'll go on as best she can alone-That's the kind of heartbreak hotel stuff she keeps pouring out,and is totally positive about it.The problem is as I have mentioned-She also gives us a completely different outlook.Note the two opposing statements I've illustrated above. At another point she says this-There may come a time when I will see that I've been wrong.Lady, are you thinking straight here or what? Some might say that the positive statements are just some last gasp hope on her part, but you cannot make totally hopeless speeches on one hand and hopeful ones on the other.Guys,my argument is compounded with a further utterance on this strangely confused lady's part-Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend. If ever there was a more despairing statement uttered I'd like to know what, but this prophecy of doom is turned onto it's head with Hey guys what if I'm wrong type stuff. The great voice of Karen Carpenter, especially in a classic number like this cannot be denied. What I will deny, and I've fully explained why,is that the lady she's illustrating in the number, knows whether she's coming, going or been.Say,could that be why those prospective loves have fought shy over the years?

The Nonsensical Lyrics:
What I've got they used to call "the blues".
Why They're Nonsensical:
Nice song generally, but have I missed something? I'm not aware of "the blues" being an obsolescent term or of its meaning changing. So unless she means she has what I'm pretty sure "they" STILL call "the blues", I'm at a loss as to what she's trying to say she's got.

The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Got the sun in my eyes
Why They're Nonsensical:
Singing a "feel-good" song about getting sun-blinded?
