The Carpenters', "Close To You"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
That is why all the girls in town
follow you all around
Why do birds suddenly appear
every time you are near?
follow you all around
Why do birds suddenly appear
every time you are near?
Why They're Nonsensical:
This song has to be one of the most childish, idiotic and almost other worldly pieces of trash I've ever heard.Who was the writer of this thing aiming at?Mentally deficient Martians?Who is this guy she's fawning over? Some kind of living Greek god?Like, every time he's near her birds come out of nowhere to be close to him?Every girl in town desires to be close to him?Oh,and by the way she seems OK with that.[Get me out of this madhouse.]The very stars are being ripped from space every time this superbeing strolls into the vicinity.[It really begins to sound like the writer of this needed help.]On the day this wonderful personage was born he was blessed by angels with all manner of beautiful qualities which would endear him to humans-All those attentive chicks-To animals-All those attentive birds-Even inanimate objects-All those falling stars.OK,so let's say she's just being symbolic about an ordinary guy she's in love with.If we leave out the birds and stars bit we're still left with that total crap about all women following him everywhere. That doesn't sound as fantasy laden as the rest, but is still nonetheless total crap.It just wouldn't happen, and even if it did she'd hardly be happy about it.I recall someone saying the reference to birds is actually a reference to girls.Nice try, except that, ofcourse, she goes on to talk about LITERALgirls.By the same token someone could have said that the stars mentioned are really film stars or something.Get this, someone refered to this monumental shambles as,quote,A cute little love song dripping with innocence. My own personal summation of it can be found in the first three lines of this article.[Here's another thing. It's not the only Carpenters number that sucks, although it's undoubtedly the worst.Others include Goodbye to love, which I showed up as the ramblings of a women who doesn't know what she's talking about, and Top of the world, which features a woman who thus has one mother of a long way to fall if that recent love interest goes belly up.She even hints as much-Wish tomorrow will be just the same for you and me.]Close to you?Guys,if that number ever comes my way again I'll be getting as FAR away as possible.

The Carpenters', "Goodbye To Love"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
So I've made my mind up
I must live my life alone
I may find that
there is someone to believe in
I must live my life alone
I may find that
there is someone to believe in
Why They're Nonsensical:
In a close analysis the lady in this number doesn't quite know whether she's saying goodbye to love or not.She begins by saying nobody ever cared whether she lived or died. That's quite a statement in itself. She goes on to say there have been too many false dawns on the love front, and can't take this any more,so it's best to forget finding a good relationship. That there are no more chances,no more tomorrows as regards meeting a nice guy. She'll go on as best she can alone-That's the kind of heartbreak hotel stuff she keeps pouring out,and is totally positive about it.The problem is as I have mentioned-She also gives us a completely different outlook.Note the two opposing statements I've illustrated above. At another point she says this-There may come a time when I will see that I've been wrong.Lady, are you thinking straight here or what? Some might say that the positive statements are just some last gasp hope on her part, but you cannot make totally hopeless speeches on one hand and hopeful ones on the other.Guys,my argument is compounded with a further utterance on this strangely confused lady's part-Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend. If ever there was a more despairing statement uttered I'd like to know what, but this prophecy of doom is turned onto it's head with Hey guys what if I'm wrong type stuff. The great voice of Karen Carpenter, especially in a classic number like this cannot be denied. What I will deny, and I've fully explained why,is that the lady she's illustrating in the number, knows whether she's coming, going or been.Say,could that be why those prospective loves have fought shy over the years?

The Carpenters', "Rainy Days And Mondays"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
What I've got they used to call "the blues".
Why They're Nonsensical:
Nice song generally, but have I missed something? I'm not aware of "the blues" being an obsolescent term or of its meaning changing. So unless she means she has what I'm pretty sure "they" STILL call "the blues", I'm at a loss as to what she's trying to say she's got.

The Nonsensical Lyrics:
Got the sun in my eyes
Why They're Nonsensical:
Singing a "feel-good" song about getting sun-blinded?
